Tip of the Month - Recover Chiral Phase-Transfer Catalyst

A particularly useful tip was reported by Lygo et al (Lygo, B.; Crosby, J.; Lowdon, T.; Peterson, J.; Wainwright, P. Tetrahedron, 2001, 57, 2403). The highly effective anthracenylmethyl cinchona PTC quat could be easily recovered from the reaction matrix (toluene as the solvent) by filtering through a short column of MgSO₄, then washing the MgSO₄ with chloroform.     Please forward the PTC Tip of the Month to your colleagues who may want to register

PTC Reaction of the Month - Chiral Alkylation

As reviewed in the new Issue 17 of "Industrial Phase-Transfer Catalysis," Maruoka's group innovated a highly effective and stable chiral phase-transfer catalyst which routinely provides high ee and high yield using only 1 mole% of the catalyst. The catalyst structure is shown in Figure 8 on page 12 of Issue 17. The reaction below was reported with 97% ee and 90% isolated yield. Ooi, T.; Takeuchi, M.; Ohara, D.; Maruoka, K.
